25 Questions for a Jewish Mother
I did not know what to expect. Would Judy Gold be doing an extended 80 minute version of her stand-up? This was the final preview before opening night. It was exciting to see something new.
The one-woman, auto-biographical play was tight, fresh, well written, funny as hell and often quite poignent. Not at all what I had expected. I just expected funny.
Her writing partner Kate Moira Ryan and she interviewed Jewish mothers on their treks accross the country while on tour over a five year period. They asked the same 25 questions to each of them, and came up with surprising results. Life-changing and life-affirming results. During this time there were children to raise, money to be made, 9/11, and a completely surprising break-up.
Several years ago I did the one man David Drake play "The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me" in Key West. To work a piece alone and slip into different charecters is one of the coolest acting excercises there is. And when the audience comes along for the ride that is happening in your head, it is thrilling.
I watched Judy sit down maybe a dozen times and transform into these fascinating woman, and you could see in her eyes that she was having the time of her life. So were we.
After, we all went to Therapy. Carson and Jai from Queer Eye were there. We watched a funny drag show then called it a night. My friend Judy Kaden brought her new man Matthew. A great catch and a lovely free spirit. I am so very very happy for her.
So much crammed into 5 hours. Life is great.

I agree. I expected stand-up and got so much more.
A great show and a nice evening with friends. Great to see Judy (looking gorgeous) and her terrific beau Matt. So glad that Tom could join us.
If only Flotilla DeBarge had gotten Judy up on stage at Therapy. She could have made her NY stage debut. I hope Judy & Matt enjoy the Lisa Marie Presley CD.
Wonder if Matt & Judy went dancing? I was tempted to take Matt up on his call for us to go for a night of dancing at Splash. But middle age hits hard on cold Tuesday nights. I never would have made it work today.
